ALL ALL ALL ALL ALL ALL ALL
THINGS THINGS THINGS THINGS THINGS THINGS THINGS THINGS THINGS THINGS
"MI" "MI" "MI" "MI" "MI" "MI" "MI" "MI" "MI" "MI"
btw... it's all in her memoir,
THE MEANING OF MARIAH CAREY.
TIME FOR MARIAH 101
...ALMOST, WE ARE WORKIN' ON IT. COME BACK SOON.
MARIAHISMS
i did the best i could
Mariah's mother, Patricia, would say this in scenarios where Mariah would feel she maybe wasn't doing enough, notably to protect her. MC later brought this into her own daily lexicon. (note: in the memoir, Mariah says she feels her mother really did the best she could under the cards she was dealt).
imma do THE BEST I CAN WITH WHAT I GOT (oh!)
On a night out behind the DJ booth, a very festive Mariah took to the mic to say this now iconic bar. Again, a nod to "I did the best I could," yet with a playful twist.
I DON'T KNOW HER
In 2003, a German interviewer asked Mariah what she thought of Beyoncé, which she responded to by singing her praises. When they followed up with Jennifer Lopez, Mariah delivered this remark - which, for the record, was genuine. It is now well-known and have become a term engrained in pop culture used as a ploy to shade someone .
I STILL DON'T KNOW HER!
A 2016 follow-up response to the prior reference. Another interview asked Mariah the same question, 13 minutes later, to which she answered this. Way to keep the schtick up, Mariah!
NOW THAT'S HOW YOU HANDLE SHI*T.
In 2016, Mariah appeared on Watch What Happens Live! with Andy Cohen. Andy bought up how Demi Lovato publicly expressed how she thought Mariah was being rude to JLo, after the "I Don't Know Her" of it all. When Andy asked Mariah for her thoughts, Mariah shared how she wished Demi would approach her privately to address these concerns, emphasizing that *that* is how you handle shit.
we
love everybody
A phrase Mariah usually employs when referring to people who may be bleak. You can always sense this is implied to be followed with a ", but..." -- but again, we love everybody!
eat, drink,
dance,
rob a bank,
whatever!
A humorous phrase to the effect of "do whatever the hell you want." Of course we don't want people to rob a bank, but it's just for laughs!
DAHHLING!
A staple of Mariah's "diva" persona. It's not only a response but also a way to address people in a classy, sophisticated, semi-European way. The more "h"s included, the better.
HAVE A SPLASH
A splash, aka bubbles, aka champagne (pronounced CHAM-PAG-KNEE).
CITIZEN OF THE WORLD,
DAHHLING!
This used to be Mi's Twitter bio for the longest time. As a devoted traveler, Mariah considers herself a global citizen, which also brings her closer to the devoted lambily internationally!
I CAN'T EVEN KNOW WHAT TO SAY
"I'm speechless", basically.
S!NG S!NG
Dare we go there...
In all seriousness, this is what Mariah referred to her Bedford mansion, which she had equal parts in purchasing with a certain Sony CEO to whom she was married. It's named after the upstate NY prison because that is what this compound felt like to Mariah at the time.
JUST FOR LAUGHS
For sh*ts and giggles, essentially.
I DON'T KNOW NUMBERS OR ACKNOWLEDGE TIME
This is philosophical doctrine for Mariah at this point, which *some* interviewers should know damn well at this point. But I digress - for starters, this means that Mariah does not care to acknowledge numerical quantities like years, birthdays, ages, etc.
ETERNALLY 12
You can read Mariah's memoir for more info about this. But to summarize with more levity, this goes along with Mariah's lack of acknowledging numbers nor time. Instead of having birthdays, it's "anniversaries," and she will always be turning 12. Forever young, if you will.
ABUSIVE
LIGHTING
SITUATION
Any type of lighting that is unflattering to one's image. For example: fluorescent lighting, overhead lighting, etc.
viva la france!
A now meme-d moment when Mariah recorded a video in Paris, France in front of the Eiffel Tower. She added lots of dramatic umph to "France" with her signature Mariah growl.
PON DE
A playful way to say "in the ___". For instance, "pon de studio" (in the studio).
BEAUTY SCHOOL DROPOUT
500 HOURS!
Mariah often describes herself as a beauty school dropout attending cosmetology school for 500 hours before becoming a global superstar. She often references "500 HOURS" in interviews and social media, "just for laughs."
I CAN'T READ SUDDENLY, I DON'T KNOW
This is classic Mariah being playful with words, a dramatic refusal to acknowledge a situation that is about to become awkward or messy.
BE A LAMB....
Mariah and her friends would often say this to each other as a preface to doing someone else a favor. Ie, "be a lamb" and pass me the splashes! This is actually the origin of the term "lamb" for her fans, which her fans called themselves, by the way.
ENSEMBLE
Mariah frequently describes her clothing as “ensembles,” a term she prefers over the more common “outfit.” This choice of word conveys a sense of elegance and deliberate style, reflecting the thoughtful curation behind her wardrobe. For short, Mariah will often say, "Do you like the ensem?'.
PIP
Mariah says PIP when she means something is really cool, great, or fantastic. She referenced the word in her song Get Your Number, "I got a PIP penthouse with a sick hot tub."
MOMENTS
To Mariah, life isn’t merely a series of events or occurrences - it’s about “MOMENTS.” A word she often uses to capture meaningful experiences, “MOMENTS” carries with it a deep sense of significance and nostalgia.
